Cen-Tex Shooters Basketball

News

Congrats to Parker French and Family!

Parker committed to play baseball to the University of Texas today. He is a junior, class of 2011 at Dripping Springs HS. He recently won the gold medal for the 16/U, USA, Junior Olympic team in Taiwan this past summer. It has been a life long dream of Parkers to play D-1 baseball after HS and playing for the Horns would just be the icing on the cake! Well, today his dream came true!

After receiving a text from him earlier that read, "Hey buddy, I'm a Longhorn", I texted back, "huh?" Already knowing that we both bleed burnt orange and white and yell for the Horns every chance we get, I was kind of confused. So I called him and this is how he answered his phone, "Hey Bro, I just committed to play baseball for the Horns!" I didn't know whether to giggle or cry! This was the greatest news ever for the family.

This is really exciting for Parker. He and I have been close like brothers ever since we meet! I had the opportunity to coach Parker in basketball and that was a real treat. His family and I are very close and I can just imagine how excited they are for Parker as well. The Longhorns are very lucky to have a kid like Parker coming to their program in the fall of 2011. Parker is a very hard worker on and off the field and is a positive role model. He is also a very hard worker in the class room! It's great to see that HARD WORK PAYS OFF!!! Parker is a great example of this. Giving up most of his time during the week and most of summers to train for what he loves has finally been rewarded. I can't wait to see him take the mound in the near future.

Congrats Parker and HOOK'EM!

Double-OT game highlights GASO

DENTON, Texas – David Eads used unintentional tactics to lift his team to a win in what ended up being Saturday's top highlight of the 21st annual Denton Great American Shoot-Out at the University of North Texas.

Eads, with two seconds left, banked in a free throw to give the Centex Shooters a 73-72 double-overtime victory against the Dallas Mustangs Blue at UNT's Public Education Building (PEB). The made bucket didn't catch Eads off-guard, but the way he won the game did.

"I looked up, and there were two seconds on the clock. I was nervous; I was shaking," Eads said of the shot, which Eads smiled at after the make. "I'm still trying to figure out how we won that game. It was exciting. It was a lot of fun to be a part of."

Regulation ended with the teams tied at 62, and the Mustangs led, 68-67, with time running out after a Luke Mergerson layup and two free throws by Jherrod Stiggers. Free throws, however, kept the Shooters in the game after Aaron Urbanus was fouled on a driving reverse layup with 0.3 seconds remaining. He made 1 of 2 from the line, forcing a second overtime.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Shooters, along with a win against the Houston Superstars later in the evening, earned the top spot in Pool 29 and will play the always-dangerous Dallas Pacers Gold at 12:45 p.m. Sunday. The Mustangs will play either the Houston Northwest Cougars or Urban DFW Elite-Jazzy at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Both games will be at the PEB.
The Mustangs' loss comes after Friday's 62-61 loss to the Houston Superstars in a game where the Mustangs fought back from a 20-point deficit. LeBryan Nash, who was out of town on Friday, returned to the lineup to join Mergerson, Stiggers and Keaton Miles
TexasHoops.com Recruiting Analyst
With just days away from the college coaches being able to go out and hit the recruiting trail, 6-foot-6, 185-pound sharpshooting guard Trey Lindsey from Austin Bowie decided to end his recruitment.
Lindsey suits up fro the Centex Shooters in summer ball.
"I committed to Centenary," Lindsey said. "I went to their Elite camp a few weeks ago and I liked the way [head coach] Greg Gary and [assistant] coach [Adam] Walsh run things at Centenary. The team is young, and it was a good fit for me."
Centenary is looking to improve on last year's conference tournament berth in the Summit. By adding the verbal from Lindsey, the Gents are getting a player that can score from the wing.
"The coaches told me that I could come in and help right away," Lindsey said. "I will be playing a two/three, and they said that I will help spread the floor on offense."
At camp, Lindsey got the opportunity to see the campus, and its environment.
"I liked the atmosphere," he added. "My dad and I had a chance to see the Dome where they played, and that is real cool. They just added a new floor and are working on the weight room. It is a smaller campus, which I like compared to the craziness of a bigger school."
Lindsey had the likes of Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, Air Force, Texas State, West Point, and Navy eagerly waiting his time on the court this July.
"I took a few weeks to make it official because my family and wanted to discussed the possibilities of me going there. We (Trey and his father John) came away very impressed with Centenary and knew it was a great opportunity, and a solid school. Hopefully while I am there, the team can win a conference tournament and get to the NCAA tournament. That is a big goal for me."
Lindsey wants to be a coach once he graduates from Centenary.
Texas Hoops Analysis:TREY is a sharp shooter with a great looking stroke. He looks to hit the three first, then tries to create. He works hard on defense and will mix it up in the paint for boards. He has nice handles and a solid basketball IQ.
(This will be the final GASO and Texas Tournament for the Shooters this season)
Damon Sayles
TexasHoops.com Staff Writer
The Great American Shoot-Out's summer 2009 circuit will come to an end this weekend with the 21st annual Reebok Denton GASO. The tournament, one of the largest in the nation, will field 311 teams from eight states and will start Friday and run through Monday.
Roughly 350 college scouts and coaches will be in attendance, as this tournament occurs during the first week of the NCAA's open recruiting period. Two of the three NBA Division winners from the previous summer 2009 GASO tournaments will be in attendance. The San Antonio Ro-Hawks 17 MC won the Dallas/IAD GASO in May. The Houston Hoopstars Elite won the Bryan/College Station GASO in June.
Here are 10 teams that could leave the University of North Texas with a GASO title, as well as 12 other teams to keep an eye on to make a major run.
BRANDON BASS ELITE
Coach: Vonzell Thomas
Area: DFW Metroplex
Players: K.C. Ross-Miller (Dallas God's Academy), Duran Hollis (Fort Worth Polytechnic), Jamison Sterns (Waxahachie)
Notable: This team has one of the better overall guard tandems of the tournament. How the frontcourt performs will determine whether or not Brandon Bass Elite advances far.
CENTEX SHOOTERS
Coach: Chris Blevins, John Lindsey
Area: Greater Austin
Players to watch: DeAndre Perry (Austin Bowie), Trey Lindsey (Austin Bowie), Aaron Urbanus (Austin Bowie) David Eads & Zach Karczewski (Lake Travis)
Notable: The Shooters have come close to winning a GASO championship all summer. This could be the weekend the team gets the job done. The Shooters have shown all summer long that they can compete against the nation's best.
DALLAS HEROES 2010
Coach: Ray Johnston, David Milson
Area: DFW Metroplex
Players: Kyan Anderson (North Crowley), Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano West), Nick Hinton (Frisco Wakeland)
Notable: The Heroes are extremely balanced; they can beat you inside and outside. Most importantly, they never seem to give up. Keep an eye on a talent-laden Heroes squad as it makes a run for a championship.
DALLAS MUSTANGS-GERALD
Coach: Gerald Booker
Area: DFW Metroplex
Players: Kameron Price (North Crowley), Richard Ross (Wichita Falls Hirschi), Josh Faurot (Hurst L.D. Bell)
Notable: This team hasn't been on the GASO summer circuit much but is considered a strong tournament threat. The Mustangs were a last-second bucket away from beating Team Texas Elite in the finals of the Dallas Showtyme tournament.
DALLAS SHOWTYME ELITE
Coach: Erven Davis, Jonothon Moore, Quinton Green
Area: DFW Metroplex
Players: Tre Lynch (Lancaster), John Bohannon (Lancaster), J.J. Williams (Mansfield Timberview)
Notable: The team is fun to watch because of its do-everything style on the court. The additions of Jordan Williams and prep school-bound Javarez Willis will add to the seemingly endless possibilities of what it can accomplish.
HOUSTON CLIPPERS
Coach: Al Torres, Drew Parker
Area: Greater Houston
Players: Randy Collins (La Porte), Drew Parker (La Porte), Byron Randle (Friendswood)
Notable: The Clippers are somewhat undersized with the 6-5 Collins being the tallest player, but talent trumps all with this team. The team knows how to win and has made winning customary this summer.
HOUSTON ELITE 17
Coach: DaShannon Holmes
Area: Greater Houston
Players: Kevin Williams (Pearland), Mikhail McLean (Houston Second Baptist), Chase Kammerer (Houston St. Thomas)
Notable: The Elite uses athleticism and their ability to penetrate to the lane to defeat their opponents. The team will play with a chip on its shoulder after an unexpected early loss in the early rounds of the Dallas/IAD GASO in May.
HOUSTON HOOPSTARS ELITE
Coach: Keith White
Area: Greater Houston
Players: Henry Riasco (Houston Stratford), Mackey McKnight (Houston Langham Creek), Jared Brown (Klein Collins)
Notable: There's so much talent on this team, and they balance the talent well. The Hoopstars won the Bryan/College Station GASO with their ability to work hard and play with heart. Expect the Hoopstars to compete for another title.
HOUSTON SWOOSH SELECT BLACK
Coach: Daryl Duncan
Area: Greater Houston
Players: Sheldon McClellan (Houston Bellaire), Jamel Outler (Houston Bellaire), Jamal Branch (Humble Atascocita)
Notable: If there's one team to watch, it may be the Swoosh Select Black. They have size, athleticism and a strong will to win. Six frontcourt players stand at least 6-7, and their backcourt players are true scorers.
SAN ANTONIO RO-HAWKS 17 MC
Coach: Michael Clarkson, David Glasco, Daryl Richardson
Area: Greater San Antonio
Players: Jordan Clarkson (Converse Wagner), Andre Roberson (Converse Wagner), Jamal Johnson (San Antonio Madison)
Notable: All eyes will be on one of the more consistent AAU programs in Texas. The Ro-Hawks step on the court with the intent to dominate every time out. If they have a team down early, they rarely give up that lead.
12 OTHER TEAMS TO WATCH
  • Dallas Mustangs Blue: A team with national 2011 prospect LeBryan Nash on the roster always has a chance to do well.
  • Dallas Showtyme Black: Eddie Leal and Ryan Marsh will keep this team in many ball games.
  • Galveston Hornets: No team wants to face the dangerous Hornets, led by high scorers Terran Petteway and Mike Evans
  • Houston Hurricanes: With Kevin Brown and Maurice Wiltz running the show, this team got hot at the absolute perfect time.
  • Houston Lynx Blue: There's tons of talent (Amos Olatayo, Jordan Clark, etc.) on this squad. Don't be shocked if they make a deep run.
  • Houston Superstars: Sharpshooter Joseph Young will bring that fast-and-furious tempo that helped Houston Yates win a UIL Class 4A championship.
  • IAD Full Court Athletes-Ross: Rickey Scott and Co. play an uptempo style that could be highly effective.
  • L&S Airwalkers: The team of predominantly unsigned seniors, led by Thaddeus Ogongbure and Narrada Lewis, is a tough opponent.
  • New Mexico Force: It's somewhat intriguing that two Texans – Michael Cobbins and Nnamdi Ezenwa – lead this solid New Mexico squad.
  • San Antonio Flyers: Brothers Jordan Alexander and Justin Alexander could help the team surprise people.
  • Texas Future 17: This team will go as far as standout point guard Jason Brickman takes it.
  • Urban DFW Elite Jazzy: While Keith Davis and Antwan Space control the paint, Doward Evans and Derico Dandridge will take over the backcourt.
GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Centex Shooters missed out on their opportunity to play for the Bryan/College Station Great American Shoot-Out championship two weeks ago. Credit that to the play of the Houston Hurricanes.
On Friday, the Shooters earned a little vengeance during opening day of the Austin Great American Shoot-Out by defeating the Hurricanes, 68-59, in the pool play nightcap at Georgetown High School.
The Shooters, with only six players, broke a 27-27 halftime tie with a strong second-half offensive showing led by Zach Karcrewski. The Lake Travis product scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half. Isiah Collier added 15 points, and J.J. Avila had 13 – nine in the first half – for the Shooters.
Maurice Wiltz scored 17 points to lead the Hurricanes, which beat the Shooters, 55-53, using a late-game layup by Gheremi Jones two weeks ago in a Bryan/College Station GASO semifinal.
Talk about it in the Message Boards
Two summer Great American Shoot-Outs are complete. Two remain.
The San Antonio Ro-Hawks 17 MC won the Dallas/IAD GASO's NBA Division title in May, and the Houston Hoopstars Elite took the Bryan/College Station GASO two weeks ago. The Hoopstars will not in attendance for the Austin GASO, which starts today and ends Sunday, but the Ro-Hawks will try to establish dominance once again.
The San Antonio Ro-Hawks 17 MC will go for their second GASO summer title of 2009.
The Ro-Hawks, led by the San Antonio Wagner duo of Jordan Clarkson and Andre Roberson, are definitely a team to watch, but here are some other teams to keep an eye on.
CENTEX SHOOTERS
Coaches: Chris Blevins, John Lindsey
Area: Greater Austin
Players to watch: DeAndre Perry (Austin Bowie), David Eads (Lake Travis), Aaron Urbanus (Austin Bowie)
Notable: With the addition of 6-7 J.J. Avila (McAllen), the Shooters added size to their already talented arsenal. The Shooters have something to prove, as they lost to the Houston Hurricanes in the semifinals of the Bryan/College Station GASO. These two teams will have a rematch tonight in a pool-play clash.
DALLAS HEROES 2010
Coaches: Ray Johnston, David Milson, Chris Givens
Area: DFW Metroplex
Players to watch: Brandon Jefferson (Lewisville), Tanner Milson (Cedar Hill), Nick Hinton (Frisco Wakeland)
Notable: Life without recent The Citadel signee Mike Groselle hasn't been too bad for the Heroes, a team with plenty of star power. The team is expected to get a huge boost as top football recruit and do-everything power forward Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano West) is expected to play.
GALVESTON HORNETS
Coaches: Terry Petteway, Alfonzo Ruiz, Sam Richardson
Area: Galveston/Houston area
Players to watch: Terran Petteway (Galveston Ball), Mike Evans (Galveston Ball), Cory Laday Clear Creek
Notable: The Hornets won the NCAA Division championship at the Bryan/College Station GASO behind a 40-point performance from Terran Petteway. It's a guarantee that opposing teams will keep a sharp eye on Petteway, who proved to be one of the dominant players of the entire tournament two weeks ago.
HOUSTON HURRICANES
Coaches: Chief Achilefu, Albert Essuman
Area: Greater Houston
Players to watch: Kevin Brown (Alief Elsik), Maurice Wiltz (Stafford), Andy Ball (Houston Episcopal)
Notable: The Hurricanes shocked many by advancing to the Bryan/College Station GASO finals two weeks ago. They also shocked some by scoring 110 points in a championship-bracket game against the T.J. Ford Elite. Nobody will be shocked this weekend if the Hurricanes go on another strong run.
HOUSTON LYNX BLUE
Coaches: George Schudy, Walter Gordy, Judy Schudy
Area: Greater Houston
Players to watch: Amos Olatayo (Alief Elsik), Nick Shepherd (Houston Westbury Christian), Josh Cleveland (Alief Elsik)
Notable: This team has so many go-to players, it's hard to pinpoint one in particular to stop. That can be a blessing and a curse, but the coaching staff will have them ready. Keep an eye on Jordan Clark (Fort Bend Bush) and Jeff Nwankwo (Fort Bend Hightower), as well.
L&S AIRWALKERS
Coaches: Glenn Andrus, Jeff Harris
Area: Greater Houston
Players to watch: Kenneth Williams (Houston Wheatley), Thaddeus Ogongbure (Houston Jones), Jonathan Barefield (Houston Madison)
Notable: This veteran team, featuring several unsigned seniors, is capable of hanging with any team in the tournament. The Airwalkers won the NCAA Division title of the Dallas/IAD GASO spring circuit. Anthony Coleman (Houston Yates) was a member of the UIL Class 4A state champion team in March.
SAN ANTONIO FLYERS
Coaches: Mark Massie, Roland Cuellar
Area: San Antonio
Players to watch: Justin Alexander (San Antonio Southwest), Elhad Emerllahu (San Antonio Clark), Kurt Russell (San Antonio O'Connor)
Notable: Few AAU teams play with fundamentals like the Flyers do. They maintain the theory that solid passing, screens and back cuts can beat athleticism at any time. The Flyers can be dangerous if opposing teams underestimate them.
SAN ANTONIO RO-HAWKS 17 MC
Coaches: Michael Clarkson, David Glasco
Area: San Antonio
Players to watch: Jordan Clarkson (San Antonio Wagner), Andre Roberson (San Antonio Wagner), Jordan Jones (San Antonio Wagner)
Notable: The Ro-Hawks are looking to go 2-for-2 in GASO summer tournaments after winning the first summer circuit at the Integrated Athletic Development in May. Five members from the Ro-Hawks were a part of the team that made the UIL Class 5A state tournament in March.
SAN MARCOS SAINTS BLACK
Coaches: Paul Buntyn
Area: Hays County/San Antonio
Players to watch: Charles Jones (San Antonio Wagner), Tyrell Williams (Gervin), Vincent Sorrells (Buda Hays)
Notable: The Saints gave an impressive showing at the Bryan/College Station GASO, losing to the eventual champion Houston Hoopstars Elite in a championship-bracket quarterfinal. This team possesses speed and athleticism, and it's not afraid of the teams with the flashier reputations.
TEXAS D1 AMBASSADORS – COX
Coaches: Dustin Cox
Area: Central Texas
Players to watch: Daniel Alexander (Dripping Springs), D.J. Stephens (Harker Heights), Cody Doolin (Austin Westlake).
Notable: The Ambassadors have talent on the inside and outside. Alexander has already verbally committed to Texas A&M. Stephens should be one of the tournament's best high-risers. The wildcard for the team, if in attendance, could be Louisiana players Brian Williams and R.J. McGhee.
Three Centex Shooters make the top 150! Congrats to DeAndre Perry at #108, Trey Lindsey at #122 and JJ Avila at #126!
Lindsey Likes The Tre
Being 6-foot-6 always turns the heads of recruiters and spectators, but when your height comes with the ability to shoot the long ball and play a guard position, more people take notice. Centex Shooter's two-guard, Trey Lindsay has those two attributes and has some college programs anxiously awaiting the July evaluation period to see him on the court.
Lindsey plays for the always entertaining and energetic Centex Shooters squad and getting up the court quickly is a must.
"I look to get my shot off early and quick," said Lindsey. "I want to shoot when I get the ball, but if that isn't there, I will dribble out to try to get space from the defender."
Lindsey says that his length helps him in other areas of his game.
"I try to get a lot of deflections on defense and alter shots on the perimeter. I feel that I do a good job of rebounding for my team."
The Austin Bowie high prospect has a list of low-major programs looking at him.
"Lamar, SFA, Air Force, Princeton, Bucknell, Centenary, West Point and VMI are recruiting me at the moment."
Lindsey has a great looking set shot and once he fires it up, it looks to be going in.
"I practice and workout four times a week," added Lindsey. "I get in the gym as much as I can to work on shooting, but also my ball handling and strength."
Texas Hoops Analysis: TREY is a sharp shooter with a great looking stroke. He looks to hit the three first, then tries to create. He works hard on defense and will mix it up in the paint for boards. He has nice handles and a solid basketball IQ.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – As the 12th annual Bryan/College Station Great American Shoot-Out concluded Sunday, the Houston Hoopstars Elite, one of the teams always among those to watch, achieved a first.
The Hoopstars defeated the Houston Hurricanes, 70-62, to claim the GASO NBA Division championship at Texas A&M University. The title was the first ever GASO crown won by the Hoopstars.
"We talk about each one of our teams having their own identity," Hoopstars coach Keith White said. "This is the first Hoopstars team to win a Great American Shoot-Out, so this team has created their own identity.
"Summer is a long three or four months, and we're looking to progress from now until then. This was a good tournament. It was kind of a stepping stone for us."
The Hoopstars, to some, was expected to make a run in the tournament. The Hurricanes, however, surprised a lot of people with big-time performances in its run to the finals. The Hurricanes scored 110 points in a championship-bracket game against T.J. Ford Elite, then edged out two good teams in the Houston Lynx Blue (79-75 quarterfinal win) and the Centex Shooters (55-53 semifinal win) to make it to the championship game.
"We've been playing in these Great American Shoot-Outs for about three years now, and we've always had trouble getting past the first or second round in bracket play," Hurricanes coach Chief Achilefu said. "I think starting [Saturday] with the T.J. Ford game, we really started to play with confidence. Our team grew this weekend.
"I knew we had a good team all along. I'm hopeful now that people are starting to see that. We have a team that can compete with anybody. I'm really proud of the effort my guys put in this weekend."
The Hoopstars, the tournament runner-up in last year's NBA Division, opened with an 8-0 lead and held the Hurricanes scoreless for the first four minutes of the game. The Hurricanes managed to tie the game at 19 with less than four minutes remaining. The Hurricanes led, 35-32, at the halftime break.
The teams traded the lead throughout the first 12 minutes of the second half, but the Hoopstars took control at the 4-minute mark. The Hoopstars took a 63-57 lead with 3:30 left to play, and Mackey McKnight, Andre Prince and Darien Harris hit key free throws in the final 90 seconds to seal the win.
"We've seen them before, and we lost to them, so we felt like we owed them one," said McKnight, who finished with 23 points and made 6 of 10 free throws in the second half. "We were looking to define our image. We had never won a third game of the day. This was about us just defining who we are."
Henry Riasco added 12 points, and Jared Brown had 10 for the Hoopstars. Kevin Brown led the Hurricanes with 18, and teammates Sean Bowman and Samson Shivers added 13 and 10 points, respectively.
NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BOXSCORE
HOU. HURRICANES 35 27 - 62
HOU. HOOPSTARS ELITE 32 38 - 70
Hurricanes: Kevin Brown 18, Sean Bowman 13, Samson Shivers 10, Dominic Steadham 8, Maurice Wiltz 7, Andy Ball 4, Gheremi Jones 2
Hoopstars: Mackey McKnight 23, Henry Riasco 12, Jared Brown 10, Darius Richardson 9, Darien Harris 8, Andre Prince 7, Charleston Reed 1
SUNDAY'S GREAT AMERICAN SHOOT-OUT
NBA DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET QUARTERFINALS
(At Texas A&M University, College Station)
Houston Hurricanes 79, Houston Lynx Blue 75: The Lynx Blue nearly came back from 24-point halftime deficit, but the Hurricanes prevailed and earned a spot in the semifinals. Kevin Brown and Maurice Wiltz each had 25 points for the Hurricanes. Trey Bennett had 24 points and Amos Olatayo had 16 points for the Lynx Blue.
Centex Shooters 80, Killeen Ambassadors 64: Every Shooter scored as the team cruised to an easy victory. DeAndre Perry and Luke Gilliam had 13 points apiece, while J.J. Avila added 12 for the Shooters. The Ambassadors' Jade Allen led all scorers with 28 points and hit five 3-pointers.
Houston Hoopstars Elite 71, San Marcos Saints Black 54: The Hoopstars started fast and ended efficiently, advancing to semifinal play over the Saints. Jared Brown and Mackey McKnight had 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the Hoopstars. Charles Jones had 13 points, and Vincent Sorrells added 12 for the Saints.
Houston Clippers 74, Metro Mustangs 53: The Clippers led by 19 at the half and never looked back against a young but talented Mustangs squad. Cedric Jones led the Clippers with 17 points, and teammate Randy Collins had 15. Kevin Wagner scored 15 points for the Mustangs.
SHOT OF THE DAY
Austin Dawgs forward Kyle Martin drained a 25-footer with no time on the clock to force overtime against the San Antonio Flight in an NBA Silver Division game. The Dawgs, however, lost in double overtime, 85-77.
TWO MINUTES WITH …
A Q&A session with one of the state's top recruits.
AARON URBANUS
2009 guard, Austin Bowie/Centex Shooters
You're listed as a 5-10 combo guard?
"For AAU, I play the two [shooting guard] quite a bit. For the past two years, I started at the one [point guard] for my high school team. I'm pretty comfortable with both. Playing the two makes it easier for us because we have two ball handlers on the court at the same time."
What's it like playing for Centex?
"We're not the most athletic team, but we all know each other and play really well with each other. We're all unselfish. Four of us played on the same high school team for a while, so we have a lot of chemistry."
As an unsigned senior, what's your recruiting process looking like?
"I have a couple of D-1s and D-2s looking, but I'm just going to wait and play out the summer and see what happens."
What do you hear recruiters saying about you?
"The question is always, 'Is he too small?' I don't think that matters. On this team, we're all smaller than a lot of the other teams, but we win with toughness and by playing hard."
What are your plans for the rest of the summer?
"In every tournament, we play to win it. We've been in every tournament we've played in so far. We haven't won every one, but we have a team that can win."
RECAP FROM THE 2009 COLLEGE STATION: GREAT AMERICAN SHOOTOUT
June 8, 2009
It was a tough lose to swallow:
Day 1
I couldn't be more proud of the way the Centex Shooters played in the 2009 College Station GASO. We were short handed on friday night and knew we would be in for a challange playing one the best teams in the state, the Houston Hoopstars Elite. The Hoopstars are a loaded, tough and physical team that backs down from no one, but so are the Centex Shooters! So their had to a be a loser and a winner in this game and we knew we had to be perfect, and that's just what we were, PERFECT! We stormed out of the gate jumping all over the Hoopstars early by 15. We held that lead most of the game until they cut it to 2 with about two minutes to play. After a much needed timeout with a 1:30 to go we put them away by 7, 59-52. Aaron Urbanus did a great job handling the rock the entire game and found his teammates Isiah Collier and Trey Lindsey who knocked down shot after shot. Zach Karczeski, DeAndre Perry, Rodney Lee and JJ Avila handled their business down low and locked up the paint from the bigger Hoopstar athletes. This was the biggest win for our program thus far this season.
Day 2,
Game 2-
With only 6 players for the 2nd pool game, the Shooters took on a very talented and well coached Houston Lynx team. We had 3 players taking the SAT and another off at football camp. This game was a blow out early as we hit every shot it seemed like and forced a ton of Lynx's turnovers. The Lynx really had no answer for our 1-3-1 matchup zone. We cruised to the easy victory by 20, 70-50
Game 3- WOW, what a game!!! The Metro Mustangs gave us all we wanted. This team is loaded with super fast athletes and a deep bench. This game went back and forth! Mitch Anderson was the key reason the Shooters held on for the victory. Coming off the bench, Mitch poured 17 points and played defense like a mad man. His teammates fed off his energy and we held off Metro and walked out their with a 9 point victory.
Game 4- NBA Championship Bracket Playoffs, We drew a very fast athletic team from Fort Worth, FW Stop Six. They were 3-0 and won their pool and were looking to knock us out in a hurry. They came out stroking the ball and were trying to press us the entire game. It wasn't til late in the second half before we had a grip on this game and took the lead with 6 minutes to go and never looked back. Before they knew it we had a 15 point lead and expired the clock to get out of the first round.
Day 3,
Game 5
- Quarter Finals, This would be a fun game to play and we were really lookinf forward to it. In the second round of the playoffs, we drew the Killeen Ambassadors who had a 4-0 record as well. They handed us our first lose (OT) back in April when we were short handed due to players visiting colleges. Now we were looking for revenge. This game went back forth like to heavy-weights trying to survive each round. It wasn't till the 10 minute mark in the second half before the wheels would fall off for the Ambassadors and the Shooters would cut off their oxygen! We out scored them 38-17 in the last 8 minutes and cruised on to the final 4, 80-64
Game 6, The Final Four- It was a tough lose to swallow, we worked so hard to get to this point in the tournament and I feel like the Refs determind the outcome of the game. Now I'm not one to blame the refs, but wow, this game was poorly officiated!!! The Houston Hurricanes played one hell of a game as well as the Shooters, the only problem was, their could only be one winner. The Hurricanes jumped all over us early and led at the break by 10. But we would not be denied a shot at winning this game. So with 6 minutes to go we started to make our run and cut it to 5 with 4 minutes to play. By the time the 3 minute mark came around we took the lead by 4, 53-49. The Hurricanes forced an error and made it a 2 point game with two minutes to go. After a mystery illegal screen call by the ref, the Hurricanes would get the ball back to tie it up at 53 a piece. So with just a litlle more than a minute to play we held the ball for the last shot. And what do you know, another terrible call by the ref, this time they claimed a traveling call that would give the ball back to the Hurricanes for the last shot. They had the ball :47 seconds to play and took what would be the game winning shot with :12 seconds left and banked it in for 2, just enough time to tie or win it, we took our shot with :7 seconds to go and missed but grabbed the rebound for the put back (all while calling a timeout which I still had 4 left) and that didn't fall either. So the Houston Hurricanes would survive the storm and steal this one from us and end our goal of playing in the 4:15 championship game of the 2009 College Station G.A.S.O. Better luck next time!
The field is set for the 12th annual Bryan/College Station Great American Shoot-Out, which will kick off Friday and run through Sunday. The tournament will feature 116 teams competing at six locations in Bryan and College Station for GASO's second tournament of the summer.
The San Antonio Ro-Hawks 17 MC, the winners of the Dallas/IAD GASO two weeks ago in Carrollton, will not be in attendance. However, there are plenty of teams that have what it takes to capture the coveted NBA Division championship. Here are 10 teams to watch.
ATX 2010
Coaches: Doug Burditt, Tim Farley
Area: Greater Austin
Players to watch: Donald Dallas (Austin LBJ), Chris Clement (Round Rock Stony Point), Kenny Black (Round Rock)
Notable: When ATX is playing well, it's an extremely tough ball club to defeat. The team meshes a consistently balanced scoring attack with an in-your-face defensive approach. When they are clicking, they are difficult to stop.
CENTEX SHOOTERS
Coach: Chris Blevins, John Lindsey
Area: Greater Austin
Players to watch: Trey Lindsey (Austin Bowie), DeAndre Perry (Austin Bowie), Rodney Lee (Del Valle)
Notable: The Shooters, a quality team loaded with high basketball IQ athletes, have shown that they can compete with any of the country's top teams. The team likes to be considered an underdog, but no one should take this team lightly.
DALLAS PACERS GOLD
Coach: Vincent McNeil
Area: Greater Dallas
Players: Dominique Dixson (Dallas Roosevelt), Devonte Robertson (Cedar Hill), Robbie Samuel (Dallas Roosevelt)
Notable: This team of predominantly unsigned seniors makes opponents play hard from start to finish. The Pacers like to make other teams play their up-tempo style, which usually means results in their favor.
HOUSTON CLIPPERS
Coach: Al Torres, Drew Parker
Area: Greater Houston
Players: Randy Collins (La Porte), Drew Parker (La Porte), Adrian Morales (Deer Park)
Notable: Some are calling the Clippers the early favorites to win the Bryan/College Station GASO. With one of the state's most balanced and disciplined squads, the Clippers are used to winning big basketball games.
HOUSTON HOOPSTARS ELITE
Coach: Keith White
Area: Greater Houston
Players: Darius Richardson (Fort Bend Bush), Darien Harris (Pearland), Jonathan Evans (Houston Bellaire)
Notable: The Hoopstars are looking to bounce back from a second-round loss to Dallas Showtyme Black at the Dallas/IAD GASO. The Hoopstars have the talent and, most importantly, the heart to make a solid run.
HOUSTON INNER CITY COUGARS
Coach: Juice Williams
Area: Dallas County
Players: Derreck James (Houston Gulf Shores Academy), Arnold Blackmon (Houston Bellaire), Ken Williams (Houston Imani School)
Notable: The youngest team in the NBA Division could be the most intriguing. The Cougars feature seven freshmen and two eighth-graders, but don't expect them to roll over against the older teams.
HOUSTON LYNX BLUE
Coach: George Schudy, Walter Gordy, Judy Schudy
Area: Greater Houston
Players to watch: Jordan Clark (Fort Bend Bush), Alex Pettigrew (Clear Brook), Jeff Nwankwo (Fort Bend Hightower)
Notable: The Lynx have decent size, which could fare well in rebounding and second-chance scoring opportunities. This team has a reputation of outplaying its opponent, and that could be the case often this weekend.
HOUSTON NORTHWEST COUGARS
Coach: Gilbert Goode, Ken Gamble, Julius Jackson
Area: Greater Houston
Players to watch: Arthur Smith (Houston Sam Houston), Dewayne Wade (Houston North Forest), Brian Elphage (Houston Sam Houston)
Notable: The Cougars use speed and athleticism well to complement their lack of size. The tallest player on the roster is 6-4. The Cougars had a respectable showing at the Dallas/IAD GASO.
METRO MUSTANGS
Coach: Horace Pope
Area: Dallas and Lubbock
Players: Jordan Williams (Dallas Lincoln) Kevin Wagner (Lubbock Estacado), Desmond Flentroy (Dallas Madison)
Notable: Players from the South Dallas and East Lubbock areas – separated by roughly 350 miles – have formed a dangerous basketball alliance. Five Mustangs played in the UIL Class 3A state championship game in March.
SAN ANTONIO FLIGHT
Coach: Jim Collins, Dan Brice, Rob Couser
Area: Greater San Antonio
Players: Tim Dailey (Seguin), LaQuan Smith (San Antonio Cole)
Notable: This team is the enigma of the tournament. Talent-wise, it can hang with anyone. How far the Flight advance, however, will depend on how well they overcome adversity throughout each game.
Congrats to DeAndre and his family. DeAndre has given the University of Houston his verbal commitment to play college football for the Cougars in the years to come. DeAndre is a three sport athlete at Austin Bowie lettering in football, basketball and track. He was recruited by Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Texas ATM, Texas Tech, Kansas, USC, LSU and Florida. According to Perry "Houston was the best fit for me and my family. I will be given the opportunity to come in and make an impact right away. I loved the campus, the dorms and the work out facilities. But most of all, Coach Sumlin really made my family and I feel right at home." DeAndre is a hard working athlete on and off the field/ court and classroom. I look for DeAndre to really excel at UH and to put up some big numbers!
WOW, another great weekend for the Shooters!!! The Shooters played in the 2009 Memorial Day weekend tournament in Austin this past weekend and came away with another CHAMPIONSHIP! That makes three out of four championship wins in tournament play this year. I feel like the team played really well and gave it all they had. Their overall record this weekend was 4-0. The team MVP went to #8 Aaron Urbanus. The Shooters overall record on the early year is 21-3!!!
Blue Zertuche: Texas Hoops
Even in defeat, the Cen Tex Shooters' coach, Chris Blevins came away from the Pearland Classic very excited for his team, finishing runner-up to the Houston Clippers. Blevins, whose team has a mixture of fresh talent and a few unsigned seniors, once again showed off their toughness against some of the best named talent in the state. Junior shooting guard, Trey Lindsay led the way for the team from Austin.
"I was really pleased this [past] weekend with everyone on our team. We played hard and I was excited to see our defense work so well," explained Blevins. "We are usually a smaller team, so we like to use 1-2-2 trap in the half court. We like to play a zone, but against the competition, our man-to-man defense worked great."
One of many bright spots for Cen Tex on defense was the play of junior guard Rodney Lee from Del Valle.
At 5-foot-9, [Rodney] is a tremendous athlete. He did so many things for us on defense that helped us get deflictions and steals. He came out of no where a few time to block shots and he is very good.
According to Blevins, the Shooters carry a 15-2 mark thus far in the spring circuit, and have been in all three title games of each tournament that they have participated in, and winning two of them.
"We went 2-0 in pool play, then 3-1 in bracket play. A 5-1 record overall at Pearland was a great finish. We had all of our players contribute throughout the whole tournament. David Eads is our best point guard because he can see the floor and has good size. He is an academic athlete and has taken the ACT and received a 32 on it. He has a chance to go to MIT and play there for the basketball program."
Zach Karczewski and DeAndre Perry are both undersized inside, but they help get the job done for us. They are strong and athletic, and they both did an outstanding job.
One the floor, Cen Tex looks towards two veterans and unsigned seniors, Isaiah Collier and Aaron Urbanus.
"These two are our leaders," says Blevins. "The way they play together on the court gives opponents trouble. Aaron may be are best point guard, but it can shoot the ball from anywhere, and Isaiah understands how and when to get his shot off. These players need to be playing somewhere next year in college."
Finally, the star of the weekend and the team's MVP was, junior, Trey Lindsay. Lindsay, connected on many key shots.
"Trey hit so many clutch shots and really stood out this weekend. He is getting some interest from low-mid majors and he proved that he can play and be a leader for us."
Blevins' likes being the underdog in tournaments, because he feels that they can sneak up on their opponents.
"We can compete with anyone in the country. Our team chemistry is what helps us win and of course our defense that we play. Just look how small we are. We hear that all the time and then play hard to show people that we can compete with anyone."
April 27
What another exciting weekend it was for the Centex Shooters. Coming off back to back championship tournament wins, the Shooters had one thing on their mind, lets make a run to the championship game of the 2009 Pearland Reebok Classic tournament. This has never been done by any Shooters team in the past, and we've had some pretty talented teams. They opened up super-pool play with a big win over NS Select from Houston with a 10 point victory. The second pool game would come down to the wire. Knotted up at 46 all, with :08 seconds left to play, our half court inbounds play didn't go as planned but Aaron Urbanus wouldn't be denied the chance to win the game. When he recognized the play was busted he shook his man and finished with a sweet left handed lay up against a big 6'7 post player for the game winner. The Shooters would win their super pool to advance to the platinum bracket Saturday night.
For winning the super-pool, the Shooters were rewarded with a first round by. So in the second round of the playoffs, the Shooters would a drawl a very talented Houston Cougars team. The Cougars were very fast, physical and explosive! The Shooters had a 5 point lead throughout the game and would eventually finish them off by 8 to advance to the second round. Sunday morning was going to be tough and the Shooters knew they were going to have their hands full with a very talented Houston Elite team. Houston Elite is among the best in the nation and very well known. The Shooters were outmatched a every position and we knew the only way to beat this team was by playing stellar defense and knocking down every open shot. And that is exactly what they did. The Shooters got busy on defense and held Houston Elite to 13 first half points and had 15 point lead at the break 28-13. We knew we needed more of that in the second half and that's exactly what we got. The final score was 44-32 Shooters.
Semifinals of the Platinum Bracket: The Shooters had to face NS Select again for the second time in 2 days. These game are never fun, because it always seems like the opposite team wins the second time around. The Shooters knew they would be in a dog fight in this game. Both teams fought hard to the end in a very close and competitive game with all the marbles on the line sending the winner to the championship game. Free throws were the answer and the Shooters would prevail in the end winning by 5.
Championship Sunday of the Platinum Bracket: The Shooters have finally reached the championship game of a national tournament!!! This game was awesome as it took place on the main stage and was for everything the team had worked for to finally get there. The ending didn't go quite as planned but the boys played hard and almost took home the hard wear! The Shooters would fall 4 points shy of winning their 3rd strait championship of the month. It came down to free throws and the Houston Clippers handled their business and took home the ship. Congrats to the Houston Clippers and the Centex Shooters this weekend in Pearland and best of luck the rest of this season. Shooters MVP went to Trey Lindsey!
Chris Blevins
April 19, 2009
The Shooters add another championship to the early season going 4-1 this weekend in the Texas Ambassador tournament, "Big Time Shootout". Despite only having 6 players on Saturday, the Shooters came ready to battle and were looking forward to playing in another championship game on Sunday. They played solid on Saturday morning taking care of business and taking down a young but talented Texas Heat team from San Antonio 69-32 to open up pool play. The second and final pool game on Saturday afternoon didn't go as well as planned. A loaded Texas Ambassador- Killeen team was up for the challenge and beat us by 3 in OT 64-61. The Shooters played hard but couldn't keep up with the crafty guard play from Killeen.
On playoff Sunday is was do or die! You lose and you go home! That would not be the case for the Shooters this day and luckaly we had a few reserves back to help us this day. The Shooters opened up the playoffs with a big win over the Texas Ambassador- San Antonio team knocking them out of contention 70-42. In the second round of the playoffs , the Shooters took on a very talented Texas Elite team from San Antonio. The first half was close with a 5 point lead at the break, but the second half the Shooters put them away for good and running away with it 72- 49.
Championship game: The Shooters knew they had their hands full when they would take the floor to challenge Texas Showtime from Killeen. The Shooters led at the half 39-38 giving up a 7 point lead just before half time. Two quick 3 point buckets game Showtime the momentum going into the second the half. The Shooters stepped up and handled their business to knock of the Showtime in the end 72-69. Great post play from DeAndre Perry was too much for Showtime and the Shooters guards took care of the ball at the end. Trey Lindsey's defense was the key in the last :25 seconds of the game. Tournament MVP honors go to #15 Mitch Anderson from Bowie High School.
April 5, 2009
The Centex Shooters opened their 2009 season in Austin TX. this weekend. It didn't take long for the Shooters to pick right back up were they left off from July of the 2008 season. They stormed out of the gates blowing the roof off the gym when they defeated the Texas Ballers from Houston TX 64-22. The defense was stellar and the highlights were energetic! It was an all around team effort.
The second pool game ended in the result of a forfeit from the Bastrop All-Stars. I don't believe they wanted any part of this team!
The third and final pool game on Saturday night was a rival matchup against the Austin Dawgs, former team of Texas great, AJ Abrahams. The Dawgs kept it close in the first half, but the Shooters rocked them to sleep in the second half when they went on a 17-0 run early and never looked back. The Shooters went on for the easy 20 point victory.
In the first round of the playoffs, the Shooters went up against a hungry TX Extreme team featuring a great player from Pflugerville, Cleveland Smith. He was a problem in the first half dropping 16 of the Extreme's 31 points. The Shooters led at the break 39-31. This game became a tale of two halves. In the second half the Shooters made some adjustments and committed to playing tough defense and ran Extreme out of the gym and the playoffs. The Shooters held Extreme to 9 second half points and cruised to the easy 80-40 win.
In the semi finals, the Round Rock Hustlaz were looking for the upset. The Shooters proved to be too much for them and put the game away early and received great quality minutes from the whole team and ran their way into the championship game defeating the Hustlaz 69-34.
Championship Game: The Shooters would not be denied the gold in a very competitive game by the Dawgs. The Shooters jumped out to an early 10 point lead for most of the game. The Dawgs played hard and gave it all they could making it a 5 point game with about 10 minutes to go, but the Shooters put them away by 13, winning it 62-49. Rodney Lee received the MVP honors for the weekend as the Shooters start the season with a 6-0 record.
Thank you to the ATX Boys for a good tournament and Thank you to our families and fans who came out to support the Shooters.
6'3", Dean Pele of Lake Travis High in Austin, had a great summer playing with the CenTex Shooters squad that competed with only seven players, but battled and often beat top teams from around the state. There is no question that Pele's hard work and his determination to be the best on the court earned him a scholarship offer. After spending the day in Nacogdoches Monday morning on an unoffical visit, Pele made a decision to commit to the Southland Conference school.
"I committed to SFA today," said an excited Pele after getting back from an evening run. "I walked around campus with (head) coach Kaspar and liked what I saw."
Pele was also getting heavily recruited by Divison II standout program, Tarleton State, and Dallas Baptist. On the Division I side, Pele had interest from Lehigh University and Boston University. "I didn't want to leave the state," said Pele. "It was important to stay close to home and go somewhere that had a great college atmosphere. I wanted to go to a small town where it is easy to get around, and everything is right there. Stephen F. Austin will provide that for me," added Pele.
Pele wasn't necessaraly looking for a D-I offer, but it was there for the taking. "It wasn't a huge priority for me to go Division I, but it was a goal of mine" said Pele. "But I took opportunity and ran with it."
Pele will major in Communications.
Texas Hoops Analysis:DEAN is a very heady and skilled perimeter player that can really stroke the ball. He has good handles and size to go along with his athleticism. He can beat you by stroking the three or mid-range jumpers. He has a soft touch and competes on defense. He also plays hard away from the ball and works to get open.
By: TEXAS HOOPS, SAM LOWE & BLUE ZURTUCHE
"THE MAIN EVENT", LAS VEGAS
Spurs 76 Branch West Orange 47
Wangmene
Bradley
The San Antonio Spurs shot out of the gate blazing in an early tipoff. The California team was no match for the quicker and more athletic Spurs group. High Major coaches lined the sidelines of the game to see 6'8" Alexis Wangmene. Wangmene dominated the paint and finished the game with 19 points, and teammate BJ Bradley was the only other Spur player in double figures with 12. The Spurs did a nice job of spreading the ball around, and getting everyone involved. The Spurs took a 38-22 halftime lead.
Minnesota Magic Elite 71 NM Force 62
Hedgecock
Tucker
From the start, the game was dead even with each team playing under control and matching each other point for point. The score was 36 all at half. The Magic took the lead in the late second half, but left the door open for the Force to come back. Cliff Tucker (El Paso Chapin), started heating up once he was able to run the wing instead of having to control tempo or run the team. Cliff slashed his way to major points and Nathan Hedgecock impressed by playing tough and aggressive to keep the Force in the game. It was late free throws that helped the Magic pull away from the Force.
Dallas Mustangs 17 Blue 68 West Valley Elite 47
Houston
Pane
It was a tale of two halves as the Mustangs started the game sluggish and took only a two point advantage into half, 30-28. In the second half, the Mustangs went on a 20-3 run. The Mustangs only allowed 17 total points in the second half and out rebounded the Elite on the offensive boards, 31-10. Brockeith Pane had a game high 12 to lead the Dallas squad, while 11 different players scored in the game. Clinton Houston was the only other Mustang in double figures with 10.
CenTex Shooters 77 Arizona Storm 40
Rice
Urbanus
CenTex Shooters dominated a smaller Arizona Storm team as they ran out to an early 30-15 lead. Dean Pele and Zach Urbanus each drained two first half 3's and the Shooters were never challenged in this mismatch. CenTex Shooters take the game by a final score of 77-40. Dean Pele lead all scorers with 19 points and Peter Rice contributed 15 with a solid effort off the bench.
Dallas Hoop Dreams 82 Hammond (IN) Hurricanes63
Kastmo
Hambrick
Hoop Dreams faced a scrappy Hammond team in their first pool game. Hoop Dreams fell behind early 17-10 as their offense sputtered for the first 6 minutes of the game. They found their offensive groove outscoring the Hurricanes 29-13 over the final 10 minutes, to end the half with a 39-30 lead behind 9 from Adam Chisholm and 8 apiece from Jeff Dick and Chris Kastmo. The 2nd half was the Brad Hambrick show as he dropped in 17 of his game high 22 points in the 2nd half and the Dallas Hoop Dreams pulled away for the easy 82-63 win.
Team Supreme Kings 56 DFW Elite 46
Gibbs
Morgan
Urban DFW Elite arrived just before tip-off and the late arrival lead to a slow start as the Kings from the Chicago area jumped out to a 28-14 halftime lead. With shots not falling from the outside and trouble getting the ball to the post in the first half versus the big interior players for the Kings, Urban DFW Elite struggled at the offensive end for most of the game. A strong move in the paint for a two handed dunk by Bobo Morgan cut the lead to 7 halfway through the second half. Conner Frizzelle and Nathan Gibbs tried to keep Elite in the game with 10 and 8 points respectively, but the Kings held on for the 56-46 win.
TEXAS HOOPS, “GREAT AMERICAN SHOOTOUT”, DENTON, TX
BY: COACH CHRIS BLEVINS
With the Centex Shooters rolling up to Denton this past weekend for their final “Great American Shootout” of their lives, the boys had one thing on their minds.  Go out and grab that hard earned scholarship!  The boys have been preparing for this tournament and live evaluation period all season.  So everything was put into perspective when they started thinking about all those long practices, long road trips and the many nights spent away from home playing in the tough tournaments all season.
Friday, July 7:
The Shooters would kick this tournament off in pool play looking for revenge on a very talented Arlington Swoosh team that had beaten them earlier in the year by 6 points.  The Shooters would get off to a fast start and never look back as they rolled over the Swoosh by 25 points.   The Swoosh just had no answer for Dean Pele.  He poured in 29 points and grabbed 7 boards.  Mosley was the man on defense grabbing 9 boards and blocking 3 shots.  Zach had a quick 10 points and 5 assist.
 Shooters 70- Arlington Swoosh 45
 #11 Quinn Brownfield- 2 pts, 6 reb
#15 Len Thompson- 11 pts, 4 reb
#20 Travis Mosley- 8pts, 9 reb, 3 blk
#21 Zach Urbanus- 10 pts, 5 ast
#23 Jon Hutton- 6 pts, 4 reb
#30 Dean Pele- 29 pts, 7 reb, 3-6 on 3’s and 100% from the field
#33 Peter Rice- 4 pts, 1 stl
Saturday, July 8:
After a goodnights sleep, the Shooters second pool game was against the Houstonians from H-Town Tx.  With a very excited birthday boy (J. Hutton) on hand and a birthday wish of  going 2-0 for Saturdays pool games, his wish was the Shooters’ command.  The boys waisted no time flexing their muscles as they were no match for the Houstonians.  The Shooters pounded them and came out on top by 53 points!  All seven players were wide awake and looking very sharp as they went on for the easy win.  Six of the seven Shooters players finished with double digits in this blow out.
Shooters 94- Houstonians 41
 #11 Quinn Brownfield- 15 pts, 8 reb, 2 ast,  7-9 from the field
#15 Len Thompson- 13 pts, 6 ast, 13 reb
#20 Travis Mosley- 15 pts, 11 reb, 4 blk, 7-9 from the field
#21 Zach Urbanus- 12 pts, 5 ast, 4 stl, 6-7 from the field
#23 Jon Hutton- 7 pts, 3 ast, 2-3 from the field
#30 Dean Pele- 19 pts, 9 reb
#33 Peter Rice- 12 pts, 4 reb
 Saturday, July 8:
With the final pool game in the “Great American Shootout”, and both teams with a 2-0 record, the Shooters would find themselves playing in the “Super Pit” against a very talented Kansas City Premiere team.  This game was for first place in their pool and a chance to advance to the championship bracket of the NBA division.  The Shooters came up one point shy from playing in the “Super Pit” last year as they were knocked out of the tournament by Houston Flight in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.  So not to be denied of winning their pool  and getting a later game on Sunday morning, the Shooters would come into this game right where they left off from the previous game.  I could tell that the boys were a little nervous as they took the court considering they have never played on a floor of this size.  The “Super Pit” is kind of intimidating.  So after a slow start the Shooters pulled it together and cruised onto an easy victory defeating Kansas City by 34 points.  Dean Pele had the game high with 22 points and 13 boards but it was the Urbanus and Mosley duo that stole the show.
 Shooters 74- Kansas City Premiere 41
 #11 Quinn Brownfield- 3 pts, 3 reb
#15 Len Thompson- 4 pts, 6 ast, 7 reb
#20 Travis Mosley- 18 pts, 12 reb, 3 blk, 9-13 from the field
#21 Zach Urbanus- 11 pts, 11 ast, 4-5 from the field
#23 Jon Hutton- 9 pts, 2 reb
#30 Dean Pele- 22 pts, 13 reb, 3 stl, 3-4 on 3’s
#33 Peter Rice- 8pts, 4 reb
 Sunday, July 9:
With a very strong performance in pool play, the Shooters would go into bracket play hoping to pick up right where they left off. With the average margin of victory being 37 points, the Shooters would need all their shots to fall if they were going to advance in this game.  In the first round of the best 64 teams in this talented shootout, the Shooters would draw the #1 team from Arkansas, the “Arkansas Wings”.  This was going to be a battle tested game for both teams.  The Shooters got out to a fast start keeping its lead by 6 through out the first half of play.  The first part of the second half was much of the same until 6 minutes in when Len Thompson decided to play “Superman” and caught an assist from Quinn going down the lane and just posterized a Wings player.  That sparked the fire for the next 4 minutes when the Shooters extended there lead to 11.  With the four minutes to play the Shooters thought they had everything in hand when the Wings decided they didn’t want to go home early. The Wings made it an all new ball game when they put on a half court press and caught the Shooters napping.  The Wings would make it a three point game with three minutes left and that’s when the Shooters also decided they didn’t want to make an early exit.  So after getting yelled at in a much needed time out, Jonathan Hutton came up with block of his life.  Climbing the invisible ladder out of no where, he swats the ball across the gym stopping a fast break and taking away the momentum from the Wings. And that was when the Shooters came to their senses and put an end to this game.  The Shooters went on a 7-0 run to end it and advance to the top 32 teams left in the tournament.
 Shooters 53- Arkansas Wings 43
 #11 Quinn Brownfield- 6pts, 8 reb
#15 Len Thompson- 6 pts, 6 reb
#20 Travis Mosley- 7 pts, 9 reb, 3 blk
#21 Zach Urbanus- 10 pts, 2 ast, 2-4 3’s
#23 Jon Hutton- 6 pts, 4 ast, 1 blk, 1-1 3- pointers
#30 Dean Pele- 15 pts, 8 reb
#33 Peter Rice- 3pts, 4 reb, 1 blk
Sunday, July 9:
 WOW!  That is the best way to describe this game that was played between the Shooters and the Houston Elite.  The Shooters started off hot with a 9-2 lead behind the sharp shooting guards, Dean Pele and Zach Urbanus.  The defense was also solid this game as Travis, Quinn, Peter, Len and Dean were outsized inside by some huge Elite forwards and post players.  The Shooters would come in at the half leading by six and new they would need much of the same if they were going to fend off Elite.  With the chance to move on to the “Sweet 16” and to pull off the biggest upset in Shooters history, it was all left on the court by these seven champions wearing that blue and gold.  The Shooters gave the Elite squad all they could handle and it came down to the last 10 seconds knotted up at 45 a piece.  When Elite drove in for the game winner and let a shot go with 5 seconds left in hit the back iron and bounced out long.  Elite would grab the board and attempt another shot but was fouled with 2 ticks left and two foul shots to come.  No pressure, Elite would hit both free throws and give the Shooters one last chance to win it with a miracle shot but Dean came up just short of the upset.
With there heads held high and all there proud parents waiting for their champs, the Shooters accomplished what they had set out to do.  They played that last game against Elite and proved to themselves and those college scouts in attendance that these seven young men can play on the next level and many of them can play D-1 basketball.  They also proved to me and to Houston Elite that they are one of the best teams in Texas and among the best in the nation.  Even with the lose, sure came the RESPECT!
Shooters 45- Houston Elite 47
 #11 Quinn Brownfield- 3 reb, 1 ast
#15 Len Thompson- 4 pts, 2 ast, 4 reb
#20 Travis Mosley- 4 reb, 1 ast, 2 blk
#21 Zach Urbanus- 13 pts, 3 ast, 3-7 3’s
#23 Jon Hutton- 3 ast, 3 reb
#30 Dean Pele- 23 pts, 8 reb, 5-11 3’s
#33 Peter Rice- 5 pts, 3 reb
Pele
One of the top shooters in Central Texas is 6'3", Dean Pele out of Lake Travis. Pele has been a long time member of the Cen-Tex Shooters and once again took advantage of opponents by scoring in many different ways. Pele can score off the dribble, knock down the open three and can get to the basket and finish. Pele also plays scrappy defense. He totaled 20 points against the very talented Houston Elite team and had a chance to win the second round game at the buzzer.
The Cen-Tex Shooters' director and coach, Chris Blevins has based his program on two key factors, commitment and loyalty. He has compiled a group of student athletes that he has coached over the past five years from the city of Austin and most of Blevins' present players have been with him since the beginning. Like others from around the state, Blevins believes in traveling throughout the summer to participate in Great American Shoot-Outs in hope of scholarship opportunities for his players. Besides competing on the court, the Cen-Tex players get there work done in the classroom.
The Cen-Tex's style of play is simple and understandable. "It's a good thing and bad thing but we love to shoot the three," said Blevins. "We live by the three and die by it. Not sure if it is a good thing, but when we are on fire, teams need to watch out." This attitude and philosophy was displayed this past weekend in Austin as the Shooters beat the Mesquite Hoops while finishing with only four players on the court once the final seconds expired.
Even with a small group, Blevins' Shooters compete everytime out on the floor
Since 2000, Zach Urbanus has been a member of the Shooters. Zach has good vision of the court and shoots the three with range. "He (Zach) is the leader and floor general of this team. I don't have to worry about him on or off the court. He is a real good kid that anybody would enjoy coaching." Zach has interest from Texas A&M Corpus, along with division II schools from around the state. With his SAT score (1110), Urbanus is getting hit hard by the Ivy league schools as well, states Blevins.
"Dean Pele is on fire," says an enthusiastic Blevins. "He is the heart of this team. He goes out and competes every time he hits the court. He is a great shooter off the dribble and leader. He plays good defense and does everything that you need him to do for his team to win." As for Pele's recruitment, he has West Point and UNT looking at him. Pele would like to attend Baylor and wants to study Broadcast Journalism.
"Len Thompson is a wild guy," explains Blevins. "He is the most underestimated player as a four man on the floor. People look at him and say that he is slow and lanky but as he has shown he can fill it from the three point line and get up and finish with a dunk." Thompson is a tight end and wide-out (won a state championship), but Blevins does believe that if given a chance, Thompson would prefer to play basketball in college. But for now, Thompson is being recruited by teams in Conference USA, SEC, and Big XII for football. Kansas State has told him that they want him to come play football, according to Blevins.
Quinn Brownfield is a player that Blevins sees as a high energy player but feels is a bit under rated. "He (Quinn) is our most consistent player on the team. He plays with intensity and is a great defender. He is a 100 miles per hour to the wall."
Travis Mosley controls the interior on defense for the Shooters and shows some bounce in the paint as opponents try getting to the rim. "Great shot blocker," says Blevins. "He is an awesome defender and will block any shot that he is near. He is athletic, his shooting is coming along and is working out on the court during his off days which has helped him improve on his shot." Blevins is hoping that the Navy will come through for Mosley as recruiting starts to heat up.
The newest edition to this Cen-Tex squad is Peter Rice. Rice gives the Shooters a versatile wing that can get things going near or away from the basket. "Peter is a great kid. He can play as a guard, or a wing. He has good handles and a good looking shot. He is long and a great all around player."
Jonathan Hutton is a guard, very patient with good handles. He can shoot the ball and lives at the free throw line.
Blevins will be with his crew participating in the finale of the Great American Shoot-Out Denton (July 7-10).
"GREAT AMERICAN SHOOTOUT", AUSTIN, TX.
BY: DEAN PELE
In the Austin Shootout the Shooters had the plan of staking the claim to their city. The plan,
at first, seemed to fall as the Shooters were down with 10 minutes to go and had ONLY 4
players. Their perseverance, though, helped them prevail, beating Mesquite Hoops in a close
one. The next morning they played a very solid Texas Top Prospects North team in what
would turn out to be one of the better played games all day. It was a see saw battle from start
to finish and would not be settled in regulation. In overtime, the Shooters were clinging to a
one point lead when the Top Prospects got a fast break. Out of nowhere, Jonathan Hutton
blocks the ball out of bounds stopping The Top Prospects from scoring and helping the
Shooters seal the game. The last pool game pitted the Shooters against the G2S magic. The
game started ugly as the Shooters went into the half down by one. In the second half they
started playing real Shooter ball and prevailed with a double digit victory. The first game of
the bracket play pitted the Shooters against a familiar foe. The team from Mesquite and they
were looking for revenge. They sure played it like they wanted it.  They couldn’t miss a shot
in the first half giving them a 20 point first half lead. The Shooters battled back and
eventually got it to six but that was as close as they would get. They lost in a close one.
Great Tournament Shooters. Go get some scholarships in Denton.
"GREAT AMERICAN SHOOTOUT " DUNCANVILLE, TX.
BY: DEAN PELE
The Duncanville Shootout was the first tournament that showed off the new, revamped
Shooters team. The weekend started off good with a big win over Big City Sports. The game
was never close as the Shooters rolled to a victory by 20+ points. The next game was
supposed to be played against a team from Louisiana, but they never showed so the
Shooters went to 2-0. The last pool play game was against a familiar team, the Dallas
Showtyme. This team was much bigger, stronger and faster than the Shooters, but they
managed to stay with them till the end. This game also featured a monster dunk by Len
Thompson. The first bracket game was to be played against Urban DFW Elite (who
eventually went on to win the shootout). The Shooters started out well, but it all went
downhill from there as they lost the game and earned another early exit from a tournament.
The newly revamped team’s first tournament was average but definitely showed signs of
good things to come.
AAU QUALIFIERS 2006
BY: DEAN PELE
The AAU qualifier was a must win for the Shooters in order for them to travel to Disney
World. Day 1 was great as they started out playing Team Xtreme, and boy was it ugly from
the star. At one point in the first quarter the Shooters held a 16 point lead. The 2nd quarter
was more of the same as the Shooters went into half not only talking about victory, but
talking about scoring a hundred as well. The hundred never happened but the victory did as
the Shooters won in commanding fashion. Game 2 was to be a bit more difficult as they
played the Texas Ambassadors 16- San Antonio. The Ambassadors started the game very
physical and ended it the same. The referring was very suspect but nonetheless the
Shooters pulled out a 9 pt victory. Then it came time for bracket play. The Shooters had
drawn the San Antonio Rohawks first. The game was ugly from start to finish as the
Shooters cruised to an easy victory and into the Semis, just one win from Disney World. Day
2 you would have thought would have been great but boy would you be wrong. The first
game was against the San Antonio Spurs with the number 3 prospect in the State, in the f
orm of 6’10” monster Alexis Wangmene. The Shooters never were close in the first half but
managed to make it respectable in the second and lost by 6. Then came the heartbreaker.
The Shooters were scheduled to play the Young Gunz from San Antonio for a chance to go
to Florida. It looked good in the beginning as the Shooters jumped out to an early 10 point
lead, but the Young Gunz continued to fight back. Then with 16 seconds left and the game
tied the Shooters took an errant shot giving the ball and a chance to win to the Young Gunz.
Well they wouldn’t disappoint as with 1 second left they hit a fade away three and sent the
Shooters back to Austin with no bid to Florida.
"TOPS IN TEXAS"
BY: DEAN PELE
The Shooters came in to Tops in Texas thinking they were ready to prove a point.
Unfortunately their actions did not follow their thoughts on day 1 as it was ugly. Their first
game was against San Antonio Cornerstone. They hung tough in the first half keeping to a
slight double digit game. But then in the 2nd half Cornerstone showed much dominance and
ended up destroying the hapless Shooters. In the 2nd game the Shooters played a team they
had beaten already during the season, the Dallas Slam. The Shooters were ready to rebound
from their lost against Cornerstone but the Slam had other ideas and beat the shooters in a
close one. Day 2 started out early for the Shooters but it seemed to help as they took a quick
lead on Waco. Waco made it close in the end but the Shooters pulled it out, setting them up
against the MLK Mash who had beaten them the previous year. The Shooters were
determined to get revenge and quickly jumped out to a double digit lead to end the first half.
The MASH however would not go down without a fight and they got it down to a 5 point
game, only to be denied in the end giving the Shooters the win and a .500 record for the
tournament. This was not the statement they were looking to make, but after their day 1 f
iasco they will take it.
VISION SPORTS: "KINGWOOD CLASSIC", HOUSTON, TX
BY: VERONIKA PELE
The Shooters wanted to bring new meaning to the term “3rd times the charm” during their stint in Kingwood.  They wanted to improve on their 1-2 record their freshman year and their 2-3 record their sophomore year.  Not only did they improve on that record, they made it to quarterfinals in the Platinum B bracket.  Their record of 4-1 and their advancement to the Platinum bracket gave them the distinction of being the best Austin team that weekend.
 The Shooters first game was against the Louisiana Lake Charles Basketball Club.  The Shooters got lost heading to the game (thanks to the fabulous navigation by team manager, Veronika Pele) and had very little time to warm up.  They came out a little cold in the first half but turned up the heat in the second.  Zach lead the team in scoring with 4 three’s, Evan added 4 assists and Sedric grabbed 7 boards. They posted a win with a score of 58-48.
Their second pool game pitted them against the Indy Hustlers (Indiana).  This win was probably one of the best wins by the Centex Shooters ever.  Every single player on this team scored and played their hearts out.  Dean and Zach combined for 10 three pointers (Dean with 6 and Zach with 4), Travis had 12 rebounds and Quinn poured in numerous 2 pointers.  Strong defense by Evan, Darius, Sedric and Chase B. rounded out the best pool game of the Kingwood weekend.  They posted a win with a score of 67-58.
 The Shooters advanced to the Platinum B bracket to play Memphis.com.  This game was dominated by the Shooters big men Quinn, Travis and Sedric.  They combined for a total of 17 deuces.  Dean added 4 three’s and 5 deuces of his own.  The Shooters had a dominate lead in the first half but allowed Memphis to tie the game with less then 7 seconds to go.  The Shooters in bounded the ball to Darius and while he was flying down the court he found a huge pick by Sedric and then found a wide open Zach Urbanus in the corner for the game winner.  Zach lets it go with 3 seconds left and misses the go ahead shot but Quinn is their to save the day and tips it back in as the buzzer was going off.  Scary, but still a win with a score of 67-65 and a birth to the next round.
 The next playoff game was against the Dallas Mustangs- Again.  This game was scheduled for 10:45 pm but it did not start until after 11:00 pm.   The boys were tired but managed to pull out a very ugly win.  Travis scored 7 deuces and pulled down 12 boards.  Quinn put in 10 points himself.  They won 51-48.  The Shooters headed back to their hotel after 12:30am knowing that they would be turning around a few hours later to play at 8:00 am against the very talented New Heights team from New York.
This game became a two point squeaker that ended in overtime and knocked the Shooters out of the tournament.  6-8 Josh Owens was just too much for the Shooters to handle.  Josh is a  2006/ 2007 high school prep player and future NBA prospect.  Dean came up with 4 three’s and 7 boards but it wasn’t enough to hold off NY.  They lost 42-44 when the final buzzer had expired.  The Shooters definitely brought new meaning to the term “3rd times the charm”.  Their run in Kingwood was inspiring and once again proved that they should never be underestimated.
PEARLAND SHOOTOUT, HOUSTON, TX.
BY: VERONIKA PELE
Shooters
The Centex Shooters went 2-2 this weekend in Pearland.
Pearland 17U +20
H-Town Flames -3
Tx Blue Chips Orange +20
DFW Showtyme -6
Overall the Shooters had a pretty good effort. The Pearland game had a team total of
10 3 pointers, with Pele hitting 5 and Urbanus hitting 3. The H-Town game had a pretty
good inside effort by Harper, Martin and Mosley but outside shooting was a real issue.
The TX Bluechips game was a close one in the first half (a little bit shellshocked from
the H-town loss) A trio of timely hit 3's and great defense busted this game wide open.
The athletic play of Brownfield, Darks and Brown helped to post a blowout the second
half. The Shooters were slow going in the first half of the DFW Showtyme game. They
stepped up their offensive and defensive game and brought this game to a one point
differential with less than 2 minutes left. Good offensive play by Urbanus (3-6 3's), Pele
(3-6 3's) and Harper (12 pts) and excellent defensive play by Gilliland and Mosley.
Mosley has been working hard to get stronger and really played big this weekend.
Look for more great things from this player this season.
"BLUEBONNET CLASSIC" AUSTIN, TX.
BY: CHRIS BLEVINS
The Shooters go 5-1 taking home first place in the "Blue Bonnet Classic". With a 2-
1 record in pool play, the Shooters made a huge statement in the playoffs.  In the
first round, the shooters dropped the Texas Ambassadors by 10, then knocking
out a solid T.J. Ford elite team by 12.  Then in the championship game, the
Shooters defense was just to much for N.B. Thunder.  Holding the #12 ranked
player in the state, Isaiah Jackson, to just 2 points (both on free throws). The
Shooters celebrated there second championship of the short season.  Congrats
and good luck in Pearland.
